Lewis & Clark

On Thursday, Team 21C had the first of of a series of Team 21C Townhalls to articulate and develop a shared vision for progress as we move forward. Meeting at the Grand Central Art Center in DTSA, Wes, Jessica, and Bryan were joined by 11 teachers joining Team 21C, Dr. Haglund, and new Assistant Superintendent of K-12 Learning Dr. Alfonso Jimenez to introduce the Team’s unique vision moving forward. As demonstrated in Live Show #10, this type of format allowed for everyone to share their passions and their roots to introduce ourselves to one another as we begin our journey to create new opportunities for our students through personalized learning, competency based instruction and the development of hybrid courses.

This will not be an easy task, which is why when Dr. Haglund likened it to the Lewis & Clark Expedition, it resonated with many of us. We were setting off into the largely unknown wilderness. Like the explorers who had the Missouri River to guide them, we have some faint traces of innovators that have worked to begin the development of the new model we are trying to build and incorporate to the needs of our students. Obstacles bedeviled the Corps, waterfalls on the river forced the men to carry their boats and supplies overland around the cataracts, hostile Native American tribes always were a worry, and the dangers from the environment and the wildlife was ever-present. Likewise we, as SAUSD’s Corps, face challenges at every turn but what we bring back can shape the future of teaching and learning within the district and provide options and differentiation for our students that will allow us to shift the educational paradigm into the 21st century.

Many will ask what is the point of this? We are moving into a new age. Technology and increasing interconnectedness has created opportunities for learning that are at once exciting and frightening. How can we adapt to the new age? Many teachers are increasing technology implementation in the classroom through the use of G-Suite for Education, Canvas, and other methods of digitizing learning. There are, however, many new and exciting opportunities to explore, encourage, and personalize learning. We are at the precipice of a new age of education and our party is only now pushing upstream out of St. Louis into the unknown. There will be obstacles to overcome and unforeseen dangers to be defeated but over the next few months and over the coming years new discoveries will be coming downstream to be shared and spread so that as a district we can all benefit from the massive, unknown territory that lies ahead.
