Cooking Up Chemistry, Part 2

The estimated reading time for this post is 1 minutes

lab coatsA common issue that we see centers around the question “What does 21st Century learning look like?” When Wes met with Marie Claire Siddal last week in Cooking Up Chemistry, we had a chance to see her take on flipping the classroom, using technology tools and leveraging the Google Apps for Education (GAFE) suite to get the most out of her class time with her students. Inherent in this is getting students to visualize themselves in the discipline they’re studying.

Here, Marie Claire’s students had the opportunity to turn their chemistry learning into product development infomercials. Using their devices, these students created short videos that allowed them to demonstrate knowledge of the discipline and allowed room for their personalities and creativity to show through the design process.

As we move forward with the new methodologies of learning that the 21st century provides,

the small steps will keep us from losing sight of the big picture.

It is easy to get overwhelmed with all of the tools that are at our disposal as educators. As Marie Claire has shown, a Google Doc here and a video project there allow for us to build confidence as teachers to take the next steps down the path.
